To engineer or not to engineer, that is the question

I often share this story proudly with students during career counselling to motivate those who are stressed out because they are confused regarding career choices while in the final year of Graduation, Engineering or even Masters.

The story goes like this: I was never a studious type chap. I hated school and equally hated studies. I was always lost in my thoughts and I always had hard time concentrating in the classroom and my book Version One and a Half illustrates this aptly. Here are a few excerpts from the book:

As soon as the Maths teacher would get busy with the day's lesson, I would switch on my inner projector and teleport into my fantasy world with my favourite characters. I had a vivid imagination. I would often imagine fighting the bad guys, just like in the cartoons. It was as if Alice was getting sucked into the dark hole. My wonderland was my playground, and I was the hero. My imagination was so active that I could imagine the characters moving on the board, instead of what the teacher was writing. So, you can imagine my intake of whatever the teacher was teaching was minimum. Sometimes my thoughts were so loud that I couldn’t even hear the teacher addressing me. As soon as my bench mate would poke me, I would realise that the teacher was talking to me, and I would quickly switch back to the real world. Luckily Harvinder, my neighbour and best pal, would poke me hard to wake me out of my fantasy world and if he was too busy to wake me up then, generally, it was the chalk zipping past my ear that would wake me up. This should give you the correct idea about my attention span in the classroom.
